… and fabulous reputations surround us, here in Falmouth Harbour, Antigua.(Yes, we’re back again).
Little old Butterfly – and my, she really does look little compared to many of the floating confections around her – is keeping some very prestigious company, these days.
As per our usual wont, we have anchored way back of the fleet here in Falmouth, but then so too have these guys:
Gunboat’s elite Phaedo came in the other night, to drop her hook just ahead of us. If you want to see this sleek and distinctly angular lady in action see here:
My guess is she’s newly arrived to prepare for the forthcoming RORC 600.
Just forward of Butterfly’s starboard bow lies a vessel of a totally different hue and era. The Eye of the Wind is the world’s only remaining true Brigantine.
Would love to show you how she looks at night – her rigging festooned with glowing sails – but alas, my cameras can’t cope with the very breezy weather we’ve had of late – the boat never staying still long enough for a long-exposure required to catch the very limited light.
Never mind – to aft we also have the Star Clipper – a thousand miles of rope (well something of that order!) keeping here 5 masts pointing to the skies.
If the harbour boasts these gorgeous showpieces of flamboyant character, then the docks at Falmouth Marina are absolutely chocka with superyachts of such super-duper superousness, that the extra-ordinary almost becomes the ordinary. Yet a superyacht at rest only half a boat, in my opinion-it’s only when it takes to the waves with full canvas flying, that it shows its full potential.
So, here are a few captures of the recent pursuit races, won by the sleekly quiet and tasteful Rebecca. We just happened to be sailing round to Falmouth and so found ourselves heading right towards the fleet of racers. When I took these shots, the sea was as choppy as hell, so hard to get a decent focus, and it wasn’t until looking over them once I’d uploaded them on to the computer that I found the short-straw hero high up the mast. You have to hand it to him – this guy has guts!
Yup, betch he drinks Carling Black Label alright!
Unfortunately, this will have to do for now. Our wifi connection today is so appalling, it has taken over and hour and a half, just to upload this paltry offering.
So, for now, from a very bright and super breezy Antigua, here’s hoping this finds you all well…
Ciao for now, kids …
